Welcome to the Room 7 Sea!
“We’re SWIMMING into 1st Grade!”

Welcome to my first grade classroom!  I am looking forward to a wonderful year with your child. Here is some information that you might find helpful.

Attendance/Lunch Count: Roll is taken and given to the office at 7:45a.m. It is important to have your child at school before the morning bell rings.  Any student arriving after the bell has sounded is marked tardy. It is also important to remember that at Hawthorne "Every Day Counts" so we appreciate that your child is here every day. We will be continuing the Great Minion Race. If your child is talking about our class minion you will know that is related to our class attendance.

Breakfast:  Remember Sweet Home School District offers a free breakfast for all elementary students.  Breakfast is served from 7:15 until 7:40 a.m.  What a great way to start the day!

Absences: Please send a note with your child to be given to the office regarding an absence. Upon return, students may pick up their “While You’ve Been Gone” folder.  It will contain all missing assignments.

Snack: We will have a class snack around 10:15AM every day.  I am hoping that we can have every student help with our snack.  If you could bring in a box of healthy snacks; crackers, raisins, granola bars, fruit snacks, etc. I would really appreciate it.  We have 25 students in Room 7.

Star Student:  Each Monday, a new “Star” will be chosen.  I stress to the students that I am very fair and I will draw the name from the “random name generator.” The Star will be honored by placing information about themselves on the “Star Student” bulletin board.  Every student in Room 7 will have an opportunity to be the “Star”.

Library: Our library day will be on Monday of each week.  Each student will be allowed to check out two books.  One of those books will be an Accelerated Reader book.  These are books that have been entered into our classroom computer. The student will be able to take an “AR” test to check their comprehension of the book.  Each student will receive points for the “AR” books they read.  I strongly believe that this unique program helps to increase student comprehension and build a love for reading.

P.E.: Our P.E. day will be on Wednesday.  Please make sure that your child wears appropriate shoes for this day.

Special Dress Days: Tuesday is SHSD College day.  All staff and students are encouraged to show their college/military support by wearing your favorite school shirt.  Also, every Thursday is Hawthorne Hornet pride day! Wear your hornet shirts or black and yellow.

Parent Communication: Your child will have a red folder that will come home with information from me or the school each day. Your child will also be bringing home a blue assignment sheet in this folder each day.  Please sign the assignment sheet every night and have your child bring it to class the following day.  If your child completes his/her assignments and has their assignment sheet signed each day they will earn points for our class. When our class has earned the required points we will have a class prize. This is a great incentive to study hard and be accountable for returning the assignment sheet.

A.R./TenMarks: We have a reading program titled Accelerated Reader (A.R.) that promotes reading comprehension at Hawthorne. After your child reads his/her book they can take a computer test to see if they remember what they read. Each book is worth .5 points. Our student goal is to have 20 A.R. points by the end of the year. This is an excellent way to improve our reading. Likewise, we have a math computer program called TenMarks. Please see the bright pink information paper. Working on math skills for 15 min. each night will increase your child’s math scores.

Birthday Parties:  If your child would like to celebrate his/her special day with the class that is great!  Please give me a few days notice so that I may plan accordingly.  Hawthorne school rules state that all birthday treats must be store bought.

Field Trips: For every field trip I will need one chaperone for every five students.  If a parent or grandparent is interested and able to be a chaperone, please let me know.  I love having family come along for the fun!

Once again, I am so thrilled to be your child’s teacher.  I am looking forward to an exciting and successful year in Room 7 as I take your child on the adventure of swimming through first grade!

Thank you for your support!
